History and Character

Nerja maintains its character as an intimate small scale village. The central parts retain their low buildings. New buildings in the central parts must be low-rise and harmonize with adjacent properties. The winding streets and shops that fit into the environment are retained. This gives an intimate, small-scale atmosphere.

The village was previously characterized by small-scale fishing and sugar mills. There are still remains of the sugar mill that provide silhouettes on the eastern outskirts of Nerja. Nowadays the tourism industry is completely dominant and around which most of the business revolves.

Balcón de Europa & Local Events

The Balcón de Europa is a well-known magnet in the city centre. It is the starting point for numerous processions, concerts and performances throughout the year. There is always something to celebrate or pay attention to throughout the year. One of the highlights is of course the Carnival in February/March.

Shops, Restaurants & Building Restrictions

You also choose which types of shops and eateries are allowed to be established. For example, you won’t find any fast food restaurants with “junk food”. Most eateries have a local connection. However, there are trends from almost every corner of the world.

The slightly taller buildings on the outskirts of the central parts are from an earlier era before building height restrictions were introduced. They are no longer allowed in the center.

The central old part of Nerja provides a cozy and intimate atmosphere with plenty of food outlets serving both liquid and solid food.
